EVENT SPECIAL MIAMI | CHIHULY AT FAIRCHILD / by Brackett Bilodeau

Since 1938, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables has operated 83 acres devoted to conserving the natural beauty and oft-ignored biodiversity of the South Florida community. Born in 1941 in Tacoma, Washington, Dale Chihuly rose to prominence in the ’70s as America’s pre-eminent artistic glass blower. Ornate and physically impressive chandelier installations have graced numerous cities, most famously Venice in the ’90s. In 2003, Fairchild began a partnership with numerous artists to diversify itself as a living museum space, and the results have been breathtaking. For a number of years, Chihuly’s works have enjoyed a symbiosis with this true gem of Miami-Dade County. Returning to a place he clearly loves and just in time for Art Basel 2014, Chihuly will unveil new works. With legacy pieces already a part of the gardens, Chihuly’s new work will continue to complement the environment the same way South Florida’s natural beauty will enhance his pieces. “Chihuly at Fairchild” is on view through May 31, 2015.
