1. SUSHI NAKAZAWA
Omakase [oh-mah-kah-seh], noun: a Japanese phrase meaning "it's up to you." In other words, "chef's choice." In other other words, the foundation upon which Sushi Nakazawa was built. Japanese-born Daisuke Nakazawa, former apprentice to Jiro Ono, spent 11 years perfecting the art of sushi prior to making his pilgrimage to the US and eventually teaming up with industry guru Alessandro Borgognone to open what is now New York's most epic twenty-course sushi experience. There's a reason for the crowds a-clamoring for a seat at the sushi bar; seeing Nakazawa in action is as entertaining as his creations are mind-blowing.

From his young years of delivering fresh sashimi to neighbors on his bicycle, to preparing and grilling hundreds of fish courses to catering weddings as a high schooler and ultimately owning a New York City restaurant empire, Chef Masayoshi Takayama is a true chef through and through. Masa brings an ethereal approach to the culinary realm through distinctive cuisine and a casually refined atmosphere, emphasizing the purity of being, living, and sensing across all elements of the dining experience. This NYC newcomer exploded onto the scene earlier this year with its gorgeous bi-level, tri-kitchen Madison Avenue space. Zuma co-founder and creator Rainer Becker brings his signature modern Japanese cuisine to Madison Avenue in a breathtaking bi-level beauty designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu of Studio Glitt. The city’s first location is comprised of three unique kitchens, each of which highlight Zuma’s renowned flavors and presentation through a variety of mediums. Sushi highlights include watari gani maki, a dynamite spider roll with softshell crab, chili, and wasabi tobiko sauce, along with Zuma’s house nigiri, certainly worth a try.

4. BLUE RIBBON SUSHI
In addition to boasting the best shrimp shumai in town, the Bromberg brothers take the cake with their sushi and sashimi, perfected by partner and sushi master Toshi Ueki. The extensive menu, divided by coast, features classics and house specialties from sweet egg to spicy lobster and Spanish mackerel, pairing perfectly with Blue Ribbon’s acclaimed sake selection.

5. NOBU NEW YORK
Chef Nobu Matsuhisa's flagship is a culinary mecca, drawing foodies from across the island (and globe for that matter) with his signature new Japanese cuisine. Recognized as an industry innovator, Chef Matsuhisa's spicy tuna roll is particularly phenomenal, composed of bigeye tuna, spicy mayo, scallions, and flash-fried crispy rice. For those with an adventurous palate, opt for the live octopus or live scallop sashimi.
